Personal Track Safety E-Learning

This is the entry-level qualification for anyone aged 16 years and over who wishes to work in the rail industry.

This is the entry-level qualification for anyone aged 16 years and over who wishes to work in the rail industry.


Initial Training Recertification
Working Near or Adjacent to the DC Conductor Rails (PTS DCCR)

This course is for anyone who is required to work in an area electrified by DC conductor rails (commonly referred to 3rd or 4th rails).

Access Overhead Line Construction Sites (OLEC1)

This course is for anyone aged 16 or over that is required to access overhead line construction sites. The course is classroom based and is taught over half a day. At the end of the course, delegates will be required to complete a theoretical assessment.

Lookout (LKT (U))

This course is for anyone aged 18 or over that is required to undertake the role of the Lookout and provide a warning to others working in the railway environment that a train is approaching.

Site Warden (SW)

This course is for anyone aged 18 or over that is: required to undertake the role of the Site Warden and provide a warning to others when straying too close to the limits set by the COSS/SWL.

This course is for anyone aged 18 or over that is required to work alone on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure.

Controller of Site Safety (COSS)

The Controller of Site Safety course is designed with the focus upon the role of the delegate within the scope of implementing and maintaining safe systems of work, whilst attaining and understanding of how to utilise the available resources required whilst 'On or Near the Line'.

Overhead Line Permit (COSS OLP)

COSS OLP is a half day course intended for those who are required to receive a n overhead line permit (form c) and set up a Safe System of Work to control the risks of persons being electrocuted from the overhead line electrification system.

Conductor Rail Permit (COSS CRP LLT)

COSS Conductor Rail Permit – Testing Using the Live Line Tester (COSS CRP LLT) is a half day course intended for those who are required to receive a conductor rail permit and set up a Safe System of Work to control the risks of persons being electrocuted from DC third rail system.

The PC course is a 1-day course designed to train candidates in taking a line blockage and sharing the line blockage protection with other IWA/COSS’s.

Level Crossing Attendant (AOD (LXA))

To instruct candidates on correctly determining their roles and responsibilities when undertaking the duties of a Level Crossing Attendant.

Points Operator (AOD (PO))

This course aims to instruct delegates on correctly determining their roles and responsibilities of undertaking Point Operator Duties. By the end of the course, delegates will be able to demonstrate their understanding and ability to manually operate power points motors in line with relevant rules and Network Rail Standards.

Handsignaller (AOD (HS))

To instruct candidates on correctly determining their roles and responsibilities when undertaking the duties of a Handsignaller.

Engineering Supervisor (ES)

This course is for personnel who are to undertake Engineering Supervisor duties including setting up a worksite within a possession and controlling engineering train movements.

Safe Work Leader 1 - COSS Conversion (SWL1)

The Safe Work Leader competence is required to be held by anyone who is required to plan and set up a safe system of work on or near the line for a group of persons. The course includes the importance of using the correct planning protocols, applying the SSOW and adopting the appropriate behaviours to be able to carry out this safety and effectively.

A SWL can also carry out the duties of an IWA providing there are no medical restrictions that would prevent this.

Safe Work Leader 2 - ES Conversion (SWL2)

The Safe Work Leader competence is required to be held by anyone who is required to plan and set up a safe system of work on or near the line for a group of persons. The course includes the importance of using the correct planning protocols, applying the SSOW and adopting the appropriate behaviours to be able to carry out this safety and effectively.

The aim of the course is provide delegates with the skills and underpinning knowledge required to undertake Safe Work Leader duties in line with competence.

Safe System of Work Planner (SSWOP)

These courses provide the understanding, knowledge and skills to undertake and complete bespoke and appropriate safe systems of work plans for staff required to work on or about Network Rail Managed Infrastructure.

Possession Support (PS)

The Possession Support course is a 1 day course and is designed to train candidates to correctly and safely carry out the duties of Possession Support as part of their duties. The course is designed to develop the candidates’ knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to Possession Support duties.

Person in Charge of Possession (PICOP)

The PICOP competence is required to be held by anyone who is required to set up and manage an engineering possession on the rail infrastructure. This includes the management of on and off-tracking On Track Plant (OTP) and train movements within the possession.

Senior Person in Charge of Possession (SPICOP)

The SPICOP competence is required to be held by anyone who is required to set up and manage an engineering possession on the rail infrastructure. This includes the management of on and off-tracking multiple items of On Track Plant (OTP) and managing movements of multiple trains within an engineering possession.
